SUMMARY:The Chicago Portage - A Lasting Gift - Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:  \n“The Chicago Portage – A Lasting Gift”\nPresented by Richard Lanyon \nThe Chicago Portage is not just history; it is still a main vein of Midwest commerce. Local author and historian Dick Lanyon takes us on a journey through the development of a waterway route that includes the Chicago Portage\, and connects the Chicago River’s South Branch with the Des Plaines River in Joliet. Dick traces how the portage route was first exploited to build a modest canal and railroads for commercial purposes\, then developed into a larger canal to divert city wastewater away from Lake Michigan. Finally\, he explores how the precise location of the ancient subcontinental divide is critical in accounting for the Chicago area’s allowance of Lake Michigan’s water as mandated by the U.S. Supreme Court. \nRichard Lanyon is a scientist\, author of “Building the Canal to Save Chicago” and others about the development of Chicago’s waterways\, and the former executive director of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. \n  \n\n  \nFriends of the Chicago Portage will present four free public history lectures in its 2023 Lecture Series celebrating the discovery\, location and development of the Chicago Portage. Accomplished local authors\, historians and storytellers will explore the colorful history of how the passage of a pair of Frenchmen though the Portage 350 years ago led to the birth of a city\, and how subsequent improvements created Chicago. All four lectures will begin at 1 p.m. on the last Saturday of January – April\, at the Lyons Public Library located at 4209 Joliet Ave.\, in Lyons.

SUMMARY:Mapping the Chicago Portage - Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:  \n“Mapping the Chicago Portage: Seventeenth-Century Explorations by Jolliet\, Marquette\, La Salle\, and Joutel”\nPresented by Richard Gross \nWhen a local amateur historian\, John Swenson\, and a podcast by a group of Chicago historians\, writers\, and artists asserted a route south of Chicago\, different from the site recognized by the National Park Service\, is the actual Chicago Portage\, Richard Gross was moved to write a well-researched scholarly paper on past and recent efforts to establish the true location of the Chicago Portage and refute the work of Swenson. Join Rich for a look at this lively debate about the location of Chicago’s birthplace on the 350th anniversary of its European discovery by Jolliet and Marquette. \nRichard Gross has been actively involved in researching the history of the explorer Cavalier de La Salle since he was a member of La Salle Expedition II when he and 22 other participants\, authentically retraced La Salle’s expedition of exploration from Montreal Canada to the mouth of the Mississippi River in celebration of the US Bicentennial. Using period documents\, he has spent many years unraveling the myths and confusion surrounding all aspects of La Salle’s activities in the Midwest. Richard taught high school Biology and Chemistry for 20 years.

SUMMARY:The History of the Chicago Portage - Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:  \n“The History of the Chicago Portage”\nPresented by Benjamin Sells \nBenjamin Sells\, author of the recently published “A History of the Chicago Portage”\, will present the story of how a seven-mile stretch of marshland gave rise to the city of Chicago. From the indigenous people who first used the portage\, through the arrival of the Europeans\, to the heyday of the Fur Trade and the nefarious account of Chicago’s first murder\, join Benjamin to learn about one of the most important\, and neglected places in United States history. \n“Benjamin Sells offers a lively and wide-ranging account of the history of the Chicago Portage from the time of the glaciers to the present. He makes clear that no place is as significant to our understanding the history of this region and that more attention should be given to the Chicago Portage National Historic Site.” — Ann Durkin Keating\, author of The World of Juliette Kinzie: Chicago Before the Fire. \nBenjamin Sells is a lawyer\, psychotherapist\, the author of nine books\, and a former mayor of Riverside\, Illinois. His latest book is “Beauty Matters: Civic Lessons from an Olmsted Village.” \n  \n\n  \nFriends of the Chicago Portage will present four free public history lectures in its 2023 Lecture Series celebrating the discovery\, location and development of the Chicago Portage. SUMMARY:Dinner Lecture: Casting a Historic Vote: Suffrage in Illinois
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an unforgettable evening at the beautiful\, historic Public Landing Restaurant with presenter Jeanne Schultz Angel and her presentation “Casting a Historic Vote: Suffrage in Illinois”.\n\n\n\n\nPrior to 1920\, women were denied the vote in the majority of elections in the United States. The struggle for enfranchisement began with the birth of our nation and was strategized differently in our local\, state\, and federal elections. Despite what people today believe to be a straightforward goal\, the path to women’s suffrage was infused with sexism and racism and triggered a fear of feminism whose roots are still seen today. While wealthy women advocates played a vital role in the suffrage movement\, they were not the only ones seeking enfranchisement. From attorney Ellen Martin\, the first woman to vote in Illinois\, to Ida B. Wells\, a woman who did not let racism stop her voice\, women’s suffrage has been a battle hard fought by a diverse group of activists in Illinois.\n\n\n \n\n\nCocktails begin at 6:00pm\, followed by a delicious buffet style dinner at 6:30pm. The dinner lecture begins at 7:30pm. \n\n\nHosted by the Canal Corridor Association and The Gaylord Building\, this dinner lecture series provides an opportunity to introduce participants to local and regional history topics during a relaxed and enjoyable evening. Reservations required for all events.\n\n\n \n\n\nFor more information call (815)220-1848×1838

SUMMARY:The 1836 Event
DESCRIPTION:Established in 1836\, Lockport played a significant part in the success and establishment of Chicago.  Join us in celebrating our great City of Lockport!  We are pleased to announce Main Street Lockport’s 28th annual 1836 Event\, to be held on February 15\, 2019.  The 1836 Event is Main Street Lockport’s biggest fundraising event\, named after the year of our City’s establishment\, and to benefit the Lockport community.  \n\n \n\nThis year’s event will include special guests\, silent auction\, raffles\, live music\, the Main Street Wall of Wine\, and VIP access to Gallery 7.  \nProceeds will fund a project to “upscale the historic Scale House”.  The building\, outside of the historic Norton Building\, was a warehouse in the 1800s when Lockport was an important stop along the waterway.  Originally used as a scale house until the 1940s\, and later used as office space for a steel fabrication company.   The scale house was vacated in the 1980s\, after which the City raised funds for a partial rehab of the building.  This year\, in cooperation with the City of Lockport\, Main Street Lockport is planning to improve the facilities\, add security lighting\, and revive it as a viable space for our City’s community and visitors.  Your involvement will help ensure this mission as well as enhance the historic building and increase enjoyment of our downtown.  \n  \nClick here to RSVP
